From Forest to Finish
Telling the story of a fallen oak's second life
FALLEN OAK FUNDRAISER
If you would like to purchase a part of this bur oak to support our Fallen Oak Fundraiser, visit the Urban Craftsman in Milwaukee. They're participating in the Riverworks MKE 53212Marketplace Holiday Edition, which takes place on Sunday, December 8th, from 11 am to 4 pm. THE STORY OF THE FALLEN GIANT
A giant bur oak in the Forest was toppled in early 2023 during a windstorm. Much of the tree was in great shape, so rather than leave it to decay on the forest floor (along with plenty of existing woody debris), the FEC applied for and was the recipient of a 2023 Day of Service grant on behalf of Hoppe Tree Service. They removed the tree and milled it as a demonstration of the importance of urban wood utilization and the making of sustainable forest products we depend on every day.

The bur oak tree was processed onsite using a portable sawmill and one of the Urban Wood Lab’s professional sawyers. A public demonstration was held as the oak was milled into live edge slabs, lumber, and rounds to be kiln-dried and auctioned to woodworkers and artisans in our community and throughout the state. Our mission is to follow this fallen giant from forest floor to crafted, heirloom, artisanal, gallery and practical wood products.
The sale of the bur oak at the Urban Craftsman is a fundraiser for The Forest Exploration Center, a non-profit 501c3 organization dedicated to sustainable forestry, education, and accessible recreation. Our work ensures the ongoing care and sustainable management of this forest and grounds, the accessible self-guided nature trail and educational opportunities. We look forward to seeing and sharing what you create! |
